Holiday Potpourri

I'm going to go ahead and blame the holidays on the complete brain drain I've been experiencing this month. Since I can't summon the mental energy to compose a whole blog post, I'm going to take Bill Murray's advice and baby step my way through this.

- I gave myself an early Christmas present and registered for the LDStorymakers Writing Conference. I attended last year, and it was really wonderful. If you've never attended (Janel, Brooke, Stacy Heaps), think about coming with me this year.

- The other night, I had a dream that I was driving Mitt Romney to the Iowa Caucus (I know, it doesn't make sense), and giving him advice about how to beat Newt. And I'm not even a Republican.

- I just finished Cutting For Stone. It is among the best books I've ever read. I literally cried through the last 100 pages.

- On Saturday, I found a fortune cookie in my purse and gave it to my son. I literally laughed out loud when I read it to him:

(And just in case my photography skills aren't up to par, my son's fortune is: "An alien of some sort will be appearing to you shortly!")

  1. How can you not be a Republican and still be a Mormon? Don't they ex-communicate you for that? (For the record, I am also not a Republican, and that's the running joke in my ward).

Glad to hear you registered for the conference. Hope to see you there.

  2. Alien fortune cookies? Is Spielberg doing that now, too?
Yay for going to LDS Storymakers Conference! I'd go, but that's just before my due date. So, yeah. Next year!

  3. My name appeared in Kim's blog...I think I will cry proud tears for the next 100 minutes. At least.

  4. I just read the description of 'Cutting For Stone' and imagine I wouldn't be quite so interested in tracking it down as I am now that you have mentioned your acute emotional response to it.

What was it that made you feel so deeply? The storyline? The characters? The author's voice? (Can such a question even be answered?)

I hope the conference is a swirling mix of serendipity and inspiration for you, dear Kim.

  5. Curtis - My husband just told me that only 7% of Utah Mormons are Democrats. Apparently, I'm in good company :)
Emily - Oh, I didn't know you were expecting. Congrats and we'll miss you!
Janel - Maybe I should do a Janel-centric post. You deserve it, my wonderful friend.
Suze - That is a hard question. For the record, I just talked to a friend who had also read the book and she didn't love it like I did. I think it resonated with me because ultimately it is about big themes - redemption, agency. It actually reminded me of my favorite book, East of Eden, in that regard. Plus, it takes place in Ethopia, which is so exotic to me, and the perspective was unique - I felt like I really understood each of the characthers and their motivations.

  6. I'm so jealous! I never get good fortunes. That one is awesome.

I was at Storymakers last year too :) I want to go again. I hope they still have space in January. Are you pitching to any agents?

  7. Oh, Angie, I hope you attend. I would love to meet you in person!
No, I am not pitching to any agents. I was tempted to sign up for a pitch session to see if it would motivate me to finish my WIP, but I decided that I am not that ambitious...

  11. Kim--I'd love to go the conference, and would definitely love the excuse to hang out with you anytime. I'll look at the link, and hopefully make it a go. ;-) Maybe some of your writing genius will rub off on me.

  12. Poor Kim! You are still having nightmares from four years ago when we dragged you to the straw poll! :)

I heard some of that Judy Blume interview that you talked about in your previous post. I loved that part when she talked about writing while her kids were at school and it also reminded me of you. Love you! Merry Christmas!

  13. Thanks for the tips on the books Kim. I'll have to start reading soon...it's something that I force to do rather than want to do! Thanks!
